Loyalty and patriotism will be on full display as the City of Gaithersburg joins the nation in honoring all who have given their lives in military service at its Memorial Day Observance on Friday, May 30, 2014, at 11 a.m. at Christman Park. The public is invited to join the Mayor and City Council, City staff and honored guests in a tribute to Gaithersburg’s sons and daughters who have made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

Joining the observance will be guest speaker Lieutenant General James Roudebush, USAF (Retired). Completing 34 years of active duty military service, General Roudebush served as a practicing physician and flight surgeon, the Command Surgeon for US CENTCOM, the Pacific Air Forces, Air Mobility Command and US TRANSCOM, the Deputy Surgeon General, and the 19th Surgeon General of the Air Force.

The patriotic ceremony will include words and music to commemorate the occasion and a solemn wreath-laying ceremony. The invocation and benediction will be delivered by Reverend Randall Lord-Wilkinson. Reverend Lord-Wilkinson grew up in Charleston, West Virginia, and earned his Bachelor’s degree at West Virginia University in 1978. In 1982 he received his Master of Divinity from Harvard and was ordained priest in the Diocese of Massachusetts in 1984. He is currently the Rector of Episcopal Church of the Ascension in Gaithersburg. “The Star-Spangled Banner” will be sung by Simon Brake, 1st place Young Artist Award vocal winner. Aishlinn Kivlighn, an 11-year-old singer, songwriter and actress, will sing “God Bless the USA.” At the event guests will be invited to fill out a card and provide a 4×6 photograph for our Book of Tribute, honoring friends and family members who serve.
