The Hidden “Fitness” in Your Relaxing Vacation

The Hidden “Fitness” in Your Relaxing Vacation

By Amy Lignor

Although it is a truth that many people wish to do nothing while on vacation but sleep under the blue sky waking up only when it is time to taste a cocktail, it is a fact that pretty much all the places you choose to vacation not only provide that fun, but also add in exercise and fitness…when you’re not even looking.
Everyone out there in this constantly moving, cellphone crazy world wants rest and relaxation. They would hate to know that fitness is barging in on their “time to relax.” However, there is no better way to achieve relaxation, believe it or not, than recharging the batteries and getting even MORE exercise. A weekend getaway or a family vacation offers everything a person is looking for in this day and age. But these vacation spots keep this a secret. They are nothing like walking into a gym, working out, and being bored out of your mind after a long, long day at work. The actual fitness comes while having a great time, whether you are one of those outdoor adventurers who wish to scope out the territory, or one of those who like to take quiet, peaceful walks by the beach. Either way, whether it be intense physical sports or easy-going activities that the mind loves, fitness is ramped up while on vacation.

If you are one of those who want to race down the slopes during the day and sit in the lodge at night, drinking and socializing with friends, Montana is the spot you head straight for. There are resorts by the thousands that allow you acres of skiable land with the best vistas imaginable. And the “lounging” areas are immense. Steam rooms, saunas, massive meals – the activities are endless when it comes to being in a “Wintry Wonderland,” but the skiing, and even walking around the resorts at that altitude help the body re-charge and get fit.

What about a hike? You may roll your eyes at thinking hiking could possibly be relaxing, but when you head to states such as, Vermont, you are hiking most times without even knowing it. The blood pumps, the circulation is improved, and the energy climbs when choosing to vacation at a place that will offer great food and fun at elevations over 4,000 feet – where just heading out to walk around the local shops will literally be a hike. For any sort of leaf-peeking or old time village exploration, New England is the spot in the United States that is truly beautiful while still allowing you to be “fit as a fiddle.”

Those who wish to kayak or canoe – those out there who believe relaxation comes from the sounds of the water nearby – the states of Utah and Colorado are perfect for “fooling” you into getting fit while having a whole lot of fun. The Colorado River provides a place for you to walk beside (yes, you’re still hiking in that area), as well as the white water rapids for you and the family to have a real thrill. Adventure is a must in that area, and the red rock canyons and the mighty Gorge are images that will stay in the mind forever. The beauty draws you in, and the ability to increase fitness while on that “relaxing” vacation happens 24/7.

Kayaking on Colorado River

Oh, yeah…catch the wave! When it comes to California you do have plenty of those beaches to sit, where you can nap while waking up only to enjoy that cocktail, but the reality is that most find themselves in the secluded foothills of Santa Monica, or walking the really uphill and downhill streets of San Francisco. And if the beach is the choice, there is always a wave that is perfect for the person who likes to surf. The core muscles used in water sports are many, and the fitness comes hand-in-hand with the amazing views and the all-out-fun.

From a Texas cattle roping event to a trip on the Mississippi River, gambling like in the old days, almost everywhere you go provides you with better health, exercise, nutrition, more Vitamin D – and all other kinds of “fit” stuff. In other words, relaxation comes from recharging the batteries and working out…without even knowing it.
